SUZAN BATU

March 2, 2015

The Phatory is pleased to announce an exhibition on new works by Suzan Batu from March 7th through April 4th, 2015 with a special closing reception for the artist on Thursday, April 2nd, from 6 - 8:00 p.m. in which the wearing of flamboyant apparel in keeping the festive nature of her work is encouraged.

Orange Riff, 2014, acrylic on canvasWith bejeweled calligraphic swirls arranged in syncopated patterns, Batu’s paintings aim straight at the heart of kitschy aesthetics releasing spiritual sugar shots along the way. Each piece acts to illustrate the common territory that secular and sacred arts share and does so with candy-colored riffs and ornate flourishes that tickles the soul.

After studying translation at the University of Graz, Austria, Batu received her BFA at the California School of the Arts and her MFA at City University of New York, Brooklyn College. She routinely exhibits work abroad and in the USA and divides her time between Istanbul and New York.
